Staying calm in a stressful situation

So, your boss just asked you for that media list you’ve been working on, your client is calling you about publicity ideas, three reporters are waiting for you to contact them back with details about the upcoming event that you haven’t finished planning yet AND your company is relocating to the other side of town in the next three days. What do you do?

Note: If your answer was “Run,” “Freak out” or “Swear at someone,” then please keep reading.

Ok, breathe. It’s incredibly easy to lose your focus at a time like this. But there are ways to keep your head on straight. And I’m going to help you. We will get through this. Together.

So, after you get done breathing, make sure you get a deadline for every single task you have. Determine which activities are most urgent. If your boss has asked for that media list seven times, and you think the eighth time might get you fired, then please…please do that first. Find something that gets your brain juices flowing. Some people chew gum. Others play music. And people like me, we click pens. (I know, so annoying.) Whatever your “thing” is, it will help you maintain order while you sort through the mess on your desk. Lastly, make a numbered to-do list, and start knocking out each assignment. Like, now.

Learn what you can do better next time. Learn to say “No” to new projects if you can’t handle them. And most importantly, learn that stress will only make you stronger. And there, you have it. You’re done. You’re finally done! Now, sit back, relax and enjoy your weekend. You have two more days until you have to return to the madness. Use those days wisely.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

  1. Thanks for your post. I agree. Find a corner to breathe and strategize. Then take on the challenge head on. Be successful and capitalize on this by reminding the boss of your effort in the next review meeting.
